Diy Dried Orange Slice Ornaments are not only easy to do, but they are also a great way to save money! All you need is an orange, toothpicks, an oven, and a microwave. Here’s how it works:
1. Cut the orange into 1/2 inch slices.
This is where you want to cut the orange the first way. If you do it in half, you will end up with two halves. This is not good.
Instead, cut crosswise. This way, when you put the orange slices in the oven for drying, they will cover each other and create one big piece of dried orange. In other words, it will become easier to separate them when you’re ready to use them again in your crafts (TIP: Whenever I use hangers on a single crochet project, I usually put a stitch marker between each piece that requires it to prevent me from getting frustrated when I have to remove a hanger before removing a pair).
2. Place the orange slices in separate containers and place them in the oven at 200 degrees for four hours.
After four hours, remove the container and carefully transfer the orange slices to a bowl of cold water. This is where you make sure they are completely damp because they will not be placed into any type of drying bag or paper towels).
3. Wrap all of your orange slices, once again starting with one half, into a single layer (because if you don’t do this, it can cause small pieces to break away from the larger piece), then air them out by placing them on a countertop for 20 minutes so that they can dry out.
4. Once they are dry, place them in a single layer on a baking sheet and place them in an oven at 350 degrees set on low.
After 10 minutes, check to see if they have already dried. If they have not dried out, put them back in the oven for another 10 minutes. Repeat this process until your slices are completely dry and brittle. DO NOT put them in a microwave or you will burn your fingers!
